Lighting

Good lighting is essential for a workshop – not only sufficiently bright lighting, but also well distributed lighting that prevents shadows. According to the information I’ve found online, you want at least 700 lux per square meter, which amounts to around 13,000 lumen for the whole garage.

Regarding the lights, it’s all LED these days, and LED fixtures have become quite affordable. LED lights are sold with various colour temperatures, usually 3000K (warmest), 4000K, 5000K, and 6500K. While I initially had my mind set on 6500K, the general consensus seems to be that this is quite blueish, with 5000K looking more natural.

You can get very powerful LED fixtures, but it is better to buy a larger number with less power and distribute them around the workshop, to prevent shadows. Cost-wise it probably doesn’t matter, as you pay essentially for the amount of lumen a light produces. I would also recommend getting IP65 waterproof lights.
